Scott’s Toy Box: Awesome November Toys

Every month, I go and look for toys for this column. I usually try to find about three toys that are either the same typeof toy or have an underlying connection. This month, I found three toys that have nothing to do with each other, except that they are all awesome and I’ve enjoy getting to play with each of them. So read on, and hopefully, you’ll get to have as much fun as I did.

Zip-It is from the same people who brought you Bananagrams. It’s a game for two where each person gets 12 dice which have letters on them. After rolling the dice, the two players race to form words using all the dice, connecting them using shared letters. The first person to finish wins a point. You can keep track of the points with the game’s carrying case, which features two different-colored zippers and the numbers 1 through 10 printed next to them. The game can be played in many different ways, and players can create their own rules, such as rolling a die again if they want a different letter. Zip-It costs $12 on And if you like dominos, check out Fruitominoes. You play it just like dominos, but instead of dots, there are fruits.

Migoga Marble Run

When I was young, I used to play a game much like Migoga Marble Run, so when I saw this set, I was struck with nostalgia. Migoga Marble Run has several parts that you put together to make a tower. Then you place the marble at the top and watch it roll all the way to the bottom. You can get a set at Learning Express for $25.

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is a great video game that comes from Activision. In the game, you play as the portal master who sends Skylanders to save the Skylands. To do this, you plug in the portal to your game console and set Skylander figures you wish to play on top of it. Each Skylander has an elemental power that expands the game further by unlocking different paths, so each figure – with its unique power – enables you to replay areas of the game that you may have already explored. Switching between Skylanders is quick and easy; all you do is change Skylanders on your portal. You can also play with or against your friends with the Skylanders they have collected. Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure can be played on the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo 3DS. The starter pack comes with the game, the portal, and three Skylanders and costs $70 on The Skylanders come in packs of three for $20 and one for $8.
