Come One, Come All, to the Annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo!

Come One, Come All, to the Annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo!

You might recall that last fall, I suggested to readers of Parents & Kids magazine that they take the kids out fishing as a fun activity to do while many other options were shut down due to Covid-19.  Even though things are opening up more, my advice still holds. Summer is all about fishing here in the south!

I fished as a kid, and southern Mississippi is the perfect place to do it! With our lakes, rivers and of course the Mississippi Sound, there are so many options. It’s a great way for parents or grandparents to bond with kids while enjoying the outdoors. Plus, who knows…you may even get a free fish fry out of it!

Here’s just one option for those who enjoy competitive fishing:

Going on since 1942, the Annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is a family-friendly fishing event that has something for everyone. This will be the 73rd year for the annual Rodeo, happening at Gulfport’s Jones Park, located at Hwy 90 & Hwy 49. It happens July 1 through 4, with gates opening at 12 p.m.

Contestants may enter fish caught from the Gulf and surrounding fresh waters, competing for both cash and prizes. The categories include 30 species of both saltwater and freshwater fish.

There will also be fish on display, along with vendors and fireworks.

The price is $5 per person, per day, with children under age five free of charge. There will also be carnival rides at extra cost.

Registration is done at the Rodeo site, which is Jones Park in Gulfport. Fishing may be done by boat or by land. Official fishing waters for saltwater species are anywhere in the Mississippi Sound or Gulf of Mexico. Freshwater fishing can be done anywhere in bayous, bays, lakes, ponds, rivers and creeks.

There are many divisions for this event, including the Kids Fishing Rodeo. Contestants must be between the ages of four and 12. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All contestants entering a fish will receive a soft drink and a snack.

This will no doubt be a fantastic family event to enjoy, whether your family is entering fish or just attending. So pencil in those dates, and make plans to have a fun time! For more information, call (228)697-4113. Hope to see you there!
