Pick A Place: Mississippi Writers Room and Collection

In between camps, church activities, and family vacations, June tends to be a busy month for a lot of folks. But, even with all the activities, with the kids out of school, there comes those times where you wish you had an ace up your sleeve – something different for the kids to see. You wish for something that will enrich their minds, even.

Check out your local library! Each individual library and library system has different events and programs each month of the year that will provide some much needed out-of-the-house activity time for you and the kids. Where to start? How about visiting a unique room that was established to celebrate some important people in Mississippi’s deep rooted history – her writers!

On the first floor of the Eudora Welty Library in downtown Jackson, you will find the Mississippi Writers Room and Collection. Our beautiful state’s more prominent writers, who were prolific at the time of the room’s completion, are featured on the walls of the room. Writers of all genres have their works available for check-out to those who have a current library card. And, being able to peruse brief biographies of these writers might just encourage you to read their works and maybe even find some new favorite authors or poets. What a treasure it is to be able to go to a single room to immerse yourself in the talents of those who called Mississippi their home.

The Jackson Friends of the Library encourages anyone interested in being involved in updating and maintaining the room to join the Mississippi Writers Room guild by filling out an application that is available online. This is a great place to visit during the super hot summer months, and, truly, any time of the year.
