20 Years Later: Celebrating Mental Health Advancement
This year marks Psycamore’s 20 year Anniversary of providing mental health treatment programs to Mississippi. As we look back on the last 20 years, we are seeing a notable change in the place mental health support has within our society. Mental illness historically has been surrounded by a stigma. The self-stigma people with mental illness experience, as well as the more public stigma surrounding mental illness and its treatment. These stereotypes and prejudice that come because of the misconceptions surrounding mental health can have a significant impact on those seeking help, but also their care. With increasing awareness, education, and support surrounding the importance of mental health, the stigma associated with mental health is on a decline. Better understanding of mental illness, is crucial in encouraging acknowledgement and a healthy approach to mental illness in individuals.
Why is mental health so important? Mental health and physical health are closely connected, and rarely can you have one without the other. Mental health plays a huge role in a person’s ability to maintain good physical health. The Center for Disease Control reported that mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, could often affect a person’s ability to participate in health-promoting behaviors. This can lead to problems with physical health, such as chronic diseases, and can have a serious impact on how a person participates in their mental health treatment. With the increased approachability and availability of mental health services, the numerous types of services available are continuing to expand. Psycamore has been dedicated to educating our communities and supporting our healthcare providers in bringing awareness to mental health and the treatment options available.
So what type of services does Psycamore provide? Psycamore’s programs are an alternative to hospitalization and combines the best facets of impatient care (structure and intense care) with the best of outpatient care (scheduling flexibility and lower costs). Treatments may be arranged for day or evening, allowing patients the mobility and freedom to maintain home and social life and daily routines, while also maintaining work or school responsibilities.
Psycamore’s comprehensive services begin the moment a person enters our doors. Beginning with a free mental health screening, followed by the medication monitoring by psychiatrists and therapy provided by experienced clinicians, and finishing with a plan for continued care at the completion of your time at Psycamore. We are with you for every step of the journey.
Currently, we are encouraged that the last 20 years of advocacy, education, and treatment options, places us in a much better position than we have ever been before. With decreasing stigmas surrounding mental illness, higher levels and availability of treatment programs, and various approaches to mental health, we are in a strong position looking forward. We thank you for allowing us to serve you for the last 20 years, and we look forward to the next 20 years.
