Last Minute Summer Camp Ideas: Sailing and Art
Set Sail This Summer
We are lucky to have several yacht clubs on the coast that provide family-oriented activities for all ages. These clubs sponsor regattas from May through October and offer sailing instruction for both children and adults. Sailing is an exceptional sport offering muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular fitness, lowering of stress, increases in agility, improvement of communication and concentration skills, improvements in spatial awareness, organizational skills, and use of science, math and engineering.
Coast resident Erica Taul has sent her children to a sailing camp the past two summers.
“The sailing camps are not only fun, but they build valuable life skills that keep children safe and confident in the water,” she said.
Here are some of the sailing camps on the coast:
Ocean Springs Yacht Club Youth Summer Sailing Classes
Two-week course teaching sailing fundamentals, the ability to rig and sail club boats, and appreciation for teamwork. Successful completion of the course will assist the student in proficiencies required for a US Sailing Certification of Competency. Courses will be staffed by US Sailing Certified Instructors. Youth Adventure Camp
One week of dedicated sailing designed to give sailors a chance to get comfortable with racing, distance sailing and navigation. The Adventure Camp is for kids that already have sailing experience and ideally have completed the Ozcqeadn SripngYacht Club’s Sailing Camp or can demonstrate necessary skills. Limited to 15 kids with a minimum class size of 8. The fee is $175.
Biloxi Yacht Club Summer Sail Camp
Children will learn how to sail with U.S. Sailing trained staff. Open to children of members and non-members that are 10 to 16 years old. The cost is $400 per session, per child. To enroll, call (228)374-6344.
Gulfport Yacht Club
GYC will be offering three two-week sessions to a limited number of campers. Camps are $395 per session and will be limited to 20 campers.
Friends of Arts, Culture, and Education (FACE)
The non-profit FACE has settled into its new home at Twelve Oaks and continues the vital work of cultivating a dynamic arts experience across our Gulf Coast. FACE helps create, provide and promote artistic and cultural activities including music, visual, performing, culinary arts and education.
Here’s a list of summer camps available during June and July:
Art Exploration Summer Camp
Sessions June 7-11, June 14-18, and July 12-16. Beginning artists aged six to 11 learn drawing, painting, print-making, and collage-making.
Painting for Kids Summer Camp
June 21-25. Children aged six to 11 create works inspired by famous artists. Notebooks are provided.
Painting for Kids II Summer Camp
July 5 -9. Children aged six to 11 create art based on famous artists. Notebooks are provided.
Teen Poetry and Meditation Summer Camp
June 21-23. Teens aged 14-16 focus on a greater understanding of classic and traditional poetry. All supplies will be provided.
Willy Wonka Kids Theater Summer Camp
July 12-23. Students aged seven through 14 will learn about live stage performance.
There are also classes available in cooking, puppetry, and games/projects.
