Various aspects of Swallowing, Feeding & Food Aversions are addressed by our Speech & Occupational Therapists (STs & OTs). The ST assesses the swallowing mechanism to determine if your child is at risk for possible penetration &/or aspiration (foods & liquids going to the level of the vocal cords &/or below the vocal cords into the lungs resulting in possible aspiration pneumonia). Feeding evaluation & treatment may be assessed by the ST or OT or in collaboration with each other to determine if feeding difficulties are due to reflux, sensory deficits, oral aversion, or structural abnormality. Swallowing & feeding therapy typically requires a multidisciplinary team comprised of an ST, OT, nutritionist, physician, & possibly a GI specialist. STs & OTs play a critical role as liaison between other professionals and the child’s family to ensure the best therapeutic outcomes for the pediatric population. Our feeding and swallowing specialists provide exceptional care & extraordinary results.
