Area Parks with Playgrounds: Family Fun With All the Options

Area Parks with Playgrounds: Family Fun With All the Options

It was just last week (at the time of this writing) that there were several inches of beautiful snow blanketing everything. Three days later, it was almost warm enough to wear shorts outside.  This crazy, beautiful Mississippi weather allows for Park Playtime just about any time during the year!  And with so many beautiful parks available all over the metro area, there’s always a place where the kids can work out their energy.

Hinds County

There are a number of great parks to visit in the greater Jackson/Clinton/Hinds County area.  Start with LeFleurs Bluff State Park for a great playground area and lots of open green space.  There is a parking and per person charge, so check their website for current rates.  In Clinton, Traceway Park is always a favorite, but Brighton and Kids Towne also rate high on the fun-ometer.  There are plenty of other area parks that have open green spaces, batting cages, and walking trails, so check out the For More Information section to get to the websites of all these areas to see what’s closest.
Madison County

Just like in Hinds County, it’s practically impossible to list ALL the great places to play. Some reader favorites include Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland which also has a beautiful “universal” playground (Adam’s Project) that is fun for all kids, but its true beauty is that it’s accessible to those with different abilities and needs.  Other Madison County favorites include Friendship Park and Strawberry Patch Park (both have great walking trails!) and Liberty Park.  Of course, some parks are more centered on specific activities, like baseball, but all the ones listed here do have a playground.  Most of our area parks are free to visit, but check websites for parking fees or entrance fees.
Rankin County

As a lifelong Rankin County resident, many happy hours have been spent at Lakeshore Park with its two different playground areas and convenient walking track (with lots of green space, also).  One can’t go wrong with Brandon City Park, of course.  And Winners Circle Park in Flowood is a simply wonderful place to visit with tons of age-specific playground area, walking trails, and lots of places for Mom or Dad to sit while kids burn off the wiggles.
Of course, there are so many other recreational facilities available that focus on tennis, basketball, etc. Wolcott Park in Ridgeland is an example of a place with great tennis and baseball facilities, but there is also a small playground area for the kids as well.  No matter where you are in the metro area, there is likely a great place to play close by.  When fresh air and fun are the goals, local parks are the place to be!
Leah O’Gwynn Kackley lives in the Reservoir/Fannin area with her husband, Jason, and their three kids.  If your favorite playground isn’t listed here, be sure to go over to the Parents and Kids Facebook page and give that favorite a shout-out!  There could be someone else looking for just that info.
