Hattie & Hudson
Written and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen
Ages 4-7, Candlewick Press
If you’ve ever been to a summer vacation lake where there is a local legend of a mysterious creature living in the depths, Hattie & Hudson may just be your kind of story… and a fun yarn to pass on to your little ones.
Hattie McFadden loves the summer lake house vacations, especially if there was any exploration to be done in her canoe. She watched turtles basking in the sun, beavers building their homes andbald eagles circling over head. She was so happy to be in her canoe on the water that she began to sing.
“When the sun is up and the day is new
And the birds are a-singin’ in the sky,
That’s when you’ll find me in my little canoe,
Paddle, just a-paddlin’ by.”
Deep in the lake, a mysterious creature, a LARGE mysterious creature hears Hattie’s sweet song of joy. He is used to hearing boat motors and other lake sounds and keeps deep in the lake in hiding. But this song is a new, happy sound. He can’t help but surface to see from where the song is coming. That’s when Hattie meets Hudson. They become friends.
However, not everyone is happy about having a huge dinosaur like creature living in their lake waters. Hattie doesn’t want any harm to come to Hudson, so they hatch a plan to help save him and his home in the lake.
Chris Van Dusen’s brilliant gauche illustrations are masterfully created with beautiful color that reminds you of family summer vacations on a mountain lake. His compositions and text placements are beautifully designed to engage the young reader at every turn of the page. The illustrations have so much to discover that a young reader will want to reread the story over and over.
