Book Buzz: Toto’s Apple

Book Buzz: Toto’s Apple

Toto’s Apple

Written and illustrated by Mathew Lavoi

Ages 2-5, Phaidon Press

Toto is a little worm with big and lofty goals. And I do mean lofty. Toto has his eye on a juicy apple high up in a tree. How will he get to that apple? That’s the problem that Toto has to think through. He tries one way… and fails, another effort… and failure. But, as in all good stories, Toto’s character is revealed time after time. He is tenacious! He doesn’t give up!

Will Toto reach his goal of working his way up from the literal worm’s eye view? Who will help him? Just how creative can he be to reach his goal?

Toto’s attempts and failures are hilarious in the way he creatively constructs opportunities with the animals and plants that live in the orchard. His persistence is our main lesson here as we follow his adventures to get to his goal, the juicy apple. The simple trial-and-error attempts are inspirational for young ones as well as their parents. There’s usually more than one way to solve a problem. Just the will alone not to give up is a big lesson in itself!

Toto’s Apple is almost a toddler’s board book, but it isn’t. Don’t let the simple design of the illustrations fool you. Thisis a very sophisticated book. With its flat colored shapes and clever text placement, the pace of the story is easy for a young one to follow along and enjoy.

Perhaps we all should have our own apple goal to strive for each day.
