Get Out in North Mississippi!

Get Out in North Mississippi!

Finding an activity that accommodates the whole family without breaking the bank or requiring tons of planning can be a challenge. There’s always something to be discovered, though.

The “hat” of Mississippi – as my oldest used to call it – can be kind of an activity desert when it comes to outdoor fun, but knowing a little about where to start can go a long way.

For instance, Tishomingo State Park is one of the southeast’s top state parks. It features hiking, camping, a swinging bridge, rock formations, wildflowers and Native American archeological excavations. Disc golf, fishing, volleyball and rock climbing are also available, and the legendary scenic Natchez Trace Parkway goes right through the park. Pack a backpack and a lunch and spend some time in the Appalachian foothills while staying fairly close to home. J.P. Coleman State Park is also nearby, and hosts Pickwick Lake and Cooper Falls, both must-see sites for any Mississippian.

Geocaching ( has made a resurgence in the past few years, and this digital scavenger hunt is an excellent way for anyone to find adventure, inside or out. What kid doesn’t absolutely love an adventure that involves finding “hidden treasure?” It also allows kids to work on developing their navigation skills using a gps. Not only is the thrill of the chase fun for all ages, it’s a low-cost activity that offers potential for unlimited enjoyment.

In my town of Corinth, aside from milkshakes and cupcakes downtown, the 60 Sights in 60 minutes downtown walking tour offers an easy and educational walk through the history of the Cross City ( If you’d like a little more of a commitment, the Coca-Cola 10k route is permanently marked throughout downtown Corinth and can be followed at any time.

The Coke 10k ( also happens in May every year, so there’s still time to train! The (free!) Coca-Cola Museum is waiting at the finish line, as well. The museum showcases over a century’s worth of promotional items and history related to the Corinth Coca-Cola industry. The Crossroads Museum, Civil War Interpretive Center, Trailhead Park, train-viewing platform, Corinth-Alcorn City Park, and Corinth Contraband Camp all offer family-friendly opportunities to spend time outdoors and in, all while making memories!

With a little research and a sense of adventure, North Mississippi can be a goldmine of wholesome and engaging activities. Google is your friend! Get ready for new traditions, fresh outlooks, and more fun than you probably ever expected.
