Mack’s World of Wonder- Countries

Written and illustrated by Mack Von Gageldonk

Ages 5+, Clavis Books

Mack’s World of Wonder is a series of non-fiction books that cover all sorts of topics. In Countries, Von Gageldonk covers all the continents with a sampling of countries to let the reader understand the vast difference in countries all around the world.

With simple descriptions of a country’s geography, culture and economy, Von Gageldonk is able to give an overview of each travel stop. The colorful photographs, with drop-outs of animals and buildings surrounded by the white of the page and interspersed with cartoon illustrations, give the book a fun and inviting feel for young eyes who are used to lots and lots of color in their video games and books. The cartoons are especially funny because they add whimsy and humor to each page.

There are also cultural artifacts unique to each country that are isolated on the page giving the layout an energy needed to keep a youngster’s attention.

The text asks interesting questions based on the photography and the cartoons. These questions are a great opportunity to prompt discussion about the different cultures and how the people live dayto day.

For parents looking for a way to introduce new lands and cultures to their young ones, Macks’s World of Wonder- Countries is a perfect primer that will reveal a world beyond their backyard.
