Virtual Book Club “Welty at Home”
“Welty at Home” is our new virtual Eudora Welty book club!
Our first book club pick is Welty’s most ambitious novel, Losing Battles. It was released on the author’s 61st birthday—April 13, 1970—making this year the 50th anniversary of its publication. Losing Battles became Welty’s first novel to make bestseller lists. Many Welty readers find this novel to be the most challenging—and perhaps most rewarding—of Welty’s works. Comprised mostly of dialogue, the novel centers around Granny Vaughn and three generations of her descendants who come together to celebrate Granny’s ninetieth birthday. Though the story takes place over the course of two days, Losing Battles took nearly fifteen years for Welty to write. Many critics have praised the novel’s lyricism and humor. We hope you join us for this literary romp through small town Mississippi family drama!
How does this work?
Together, we’ll read and discuss Losing Battles over the course of ten weeks. Each week, we’ll read an average of 45 pages (see weekly page breakdown below). On Wednesdays at 12 p.m., we’ll host a live book club discussion on Zoom, led by Welty’s friend and biographer Dr. Suzanne Marrs. Our first Zoom discussion will be Wednesday, April 29.
If you’re not able to make the Zoom video call, you can still follow along on social media! Each week we’ll post a quote from the reading on Facebook and Instagram. Comment on the post, and share your own thoughts and photos using #WeltyatHome and tagging @eudoraweltyhouse.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org.
