P&K How To: How to Choose a Boarding Place for Your Pet
It can be tough to leave our pets, even if only for a weekend. After all, they’re part of the family! Thankfully, leaving your pet with people you trust can make the separation a little easier. Here are a few tips to choose the perfect place to board your pets while you go on vacation this summer.
Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Your vet knows your pet’s personality and quirks and will be able to suggest a trustworthy boarder that fits his needs. It’s also possible that your veterinarian even boards pets at the clinic!
Prioritize your pet’s needs. Does your dog need to socialize and burn off excess energy? Maybe a boarder that offers playtime with other dogs is a good option for your pet. Does your cat have special medical needs? A vet’s office, where he’ll receive around-the-clock attention, could be a good fit. If you have an especially large animal, you may need to seek out a facility with extra-large kennels.
Tour a few facilities. Once you’ve narrowed your list down to a few good boarders in your area, go take a look in person. You may sense that one environment fits your pet’s personality better than another. You could even bring your pet along to see how they respond to the employees and other animals.
Ask questions. When you meet the employees at potential boarding facilities, be sure to ask about any concerns. A few helpful questions to ask are:
· What veterinary training do you require of your employees?
· What safety protocols does your facility follow?
· Do you require all pets to be vaccinated?
· Are the kennels monitored at all times?
· Will I receive periodic updates about my pet?
It would be ideal if we could bring our furry friends with us wherever we go. But with these tips, you’ll be able to leave your pet in the right hands knowing they are happy and comfortable. Now, enjoy your family vacation — your pets will enjoy theirs, too!
