Book Buzz: Ocean Meets Sky

Ocean Meets Sky

Written and illustrated by The Fan Brothers

Ages 3-7, Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers

Finn lived by the sea. He reveled in all things ocean. Especially the stories that his Grandfather told him – stories of a far-off land where ocean meets sky.

One day, to honor his Grandfather, who would have been ninety years old, Finn decided to build a boat and set sail on an adventure he and his Grandfather had planned together. He worked very hard to get the boat sea-worthy. But, building a boat is a very tiring thing to do, so Finn decided to take a nap belowdecks to rest.

When he awoke, the boat was gently rocking back and forth. The journey had begun. Soon, Finn was lonely and said so out loud. That is when he met a giant golden fish who had overheard him.

“Do you know where ocean meets sky?” Finn asked the fish.

“It’s high and low and deep as the sea,” said the fish, “I can show you the way.”

That’s when the odyssey continued on to distant lands where Finn experiences many magical wonders. Wonders that blended the sky, ocean, ships and marine creatures in ways only a misty dream could conjure. On and on the voyage continued until the fish began to fly to the moon. Finn, however, couldn’t keep up to say good-bye.

Soon, Finn heard a distant voice call his name. Was it the voice of his now departed Grandfather?

The Fan Brothers, Terry and Eric, illustrated this book in graphite with digital color in an ethereal trancelike quality that will keep readers looking for clues in the illustrations.

This magical tour-de-force of a half-awake child is a perfect bedtime story as children are out of school for vacation. Summer beckons us all to go on new adventures. All we have to do is decide to go.
