FITNESS FEST: September 7, Jackson – Save the Date!

FITNESS FEST: September 7, Jackson – Save the Date!
By Dasha Peipon

Do you ever catch yourself thinking your kids need to be more active? The times have changed, and we don’t feel safe letting our children run outside all day without supervision, like we used to do ourselves when we were young. How do we get our children excited to move more? Exercise DVD’s? Family walks? Gym membership? What can we do to encourage family fitness and healthy habits?

Solution: Come to Fitness Fest! Mark your calendars for September 7, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. for a fun family event in Mississippi Trade Mart at the Fair Grounds, sponsored by Children’s of Mississippi. This fun one-day event will show you how easy it actually is to add healthy activities to your routine, and you’ll be able to do it all inside, enjoying the comfort of air conditioning. While the kids play, you’ll get a portion of motivation to make some positive changes. Adults will be offered opportunity to learn from a number of health and fitness experts who will be there to share what they know and do best.

All ages are welcome, and everyone is guaranteed to have a good time! Kids will get excited about fitness and active lifestyle while enjoying the Animal Alphabet Safari, a GIANT 40×60 feet Healthy Choice maze, balance games, jump ropes, hula hoops and sharing their best moves on the dance floor. There will be on-stage entertainment as well, including educational speakers, dancers, musicians, athletes.

This year Fitness Fest will have a special guest, MPB’s Ed Said! He is a Mississippi-favorite, every child’s best friend. Most likely, your youngsters know Ed Said from school or library events. But if you haven’t met him yet, here is all you need to know. Ed Said has a message for your head: It’s not hocus-pocus; being healthy keeps you focused! Ed Said is Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s web-based “edutainment” series aimed at teaching children how to eat healthy and exercise. Complete with an interactive website, blog, mobile site and classroom curriculum, the series focuses on five fruits and five vegetables and encourages children to “get moving” into a healthier lifestyle. Ed’s catchy raps and rhymes are accompanied by webisodes and music videos, all found on his home base at EdSaid.org. We look forward to singing and dancing with Ed Said!

Fitness Fest is an event you cannot miss. We hope you can come and bring your whole family. Tickets are $2 per person or $10 per family and will be available at the door. Look for free passes on www.parentsandkids.com closer to the date. Follow Parents & Kids Facebook page for updates.

Dasha Peipon heard so much about Fitness Fest in the past. This will be her first event since she moved to Jackson, MS a few years ago – and she cannot wait to put on her running shoes to exercise and have fun with her kids at Fitness Fest.
