Scott’s Toy Box: Toys to Get Ready for School
Sometimes I like to use my May column to highlight some educational toys. I choose this time because this is our school issue and learning shouldn’t take a two-month vacation. Plus isn’t it best to learn and have fun at the same time? For this month’s column, I found some toys recommended for kids who are headed to school for the first time this fall. All of these toys are found at Lakeshorelearning.com.
For those looking into learning letters, spelling, speaking, and simple words, Letter Crayons is for you. Letter Crayons comes with four different color plastic crayon boxes that fit three crayons each. It also comes with 32 plastic crayons and 24 cards all color coded to learn three letter words. On one side of that card is the word while the other side of the card has a picture on it. Letter Crayons costs $30.
For those looking into learning about numbers, counting, and simple math, Counting Cones should be scooped up. It comes with 10 plastic ice cream cones each with a number printed on them. It also comes with 55 plastic ice cream scoops in 5 different colors, enough to match the cones number at the same time. What’s great is that you can even use these cones and scoops to run a pretend ice cream store. Counting Cones costs $30.
Nuts About Math
Nuts About Math is actually three different sets of toys that can be purchased separately or together. Each of the three sets contains plastic bolts and nuts that have a basic tread to screw onto the bolts. Nuts About Counting comes with 10 bolts of different lengths that can only hold the number of nuts printed on the head of the bolt. It also comes with 55 nuts in four different colors so that kids can count out the number of physical nuts that can fit on the bolt. Nuts About Sorting comes with 8 different colored bolts all of the same length and 48 nuts in the coordinating colors. Kids can sort the nuts by placing them on the same colored bolt. Nuts About Patterning comes with 6 bolts of the same length and 60 nuts in four different colors. Kids can choose which of the nuts to put on to make different colored patterns. Each set cost $30 separately or can be bought all together as Nuts About Math for $85.
