Rain, Rain Go Away! – Local Indoor Activities for Families

Rain, Rain Go Away! – Local Indoor Activities for Families
By Jennie Bradford Curlee

They say that “April showers bring May flowers,” but it has been raining in Northeast Mississippi for what seems like forever. Don’t let the rain and gloomy weather get you down this spring. North Mississippi offers plenty of fun indoor activities for families when Mother Nature tries her best to keep us down.

Visit a Museum or Two

Tupelo is home to phenomenal museums that highlight the city’s rich history in unique ways. The Oren Dunn City Museum is housed in a converted dairy barn and is located in Ballard Park. The museum chronicles the city’s history through permanent exhibits including the 1936 tornado that devastated Tupelo and even Mississippi fossils. The Tupelo Veterans Museum is attached to the Oren Dunn City Museum and is home to an impressive collection of military artifacts.

Visitors from all over the world come to Tupelo to visit the birthplace of Elvis Presley. In fact, it is one of the most visited attractions in the entire state of Mississippi and it is right here in our backyard. The attraction includes the humble home where he was born, a museum that chronicles his thirteen years coming of age in Tupelo, and the Assembly of God Church where he was inspired by gospel music.

HealthWorks! Kids Museum seeks to educate children on how to lead inspired, healthy lives through its many interactive exhibits and special events. From personal hygiene and exercise to making healthy food choices, kids have so much fun they don’t realize they’re learning. Visit their website at to see a full calendar of events.

Plan Your Escape

Escape rooms are all the rage, inviting family and friends to work together to problem solve. These immersive experiences are great for kids of all ages and can teach valuable lessons on how to work together and utilize analytical skills. Paradox Challenge Rooms and Deadbolt Escape Rooms in Tupelo both offer different tests for families to enjoy. Plan a family outing including dinner at your favorite local restaurant and talk though how each member of the family used their special skills to help escape.

Sometimes children just need to get out some of that pent up energy. Thankfully, Tupelo has many options for doing just that. The Tupelo Aquatic Center is a state-of-the-art aquatics facility that provides recreational swimming for North Mississippi. The center includes diving boards, a climbing wall, obstacle course, and more.

Is your family full of animal lovers? Then kitten yoga is for you. The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society offers kitten yoga Monday nights at 6:00 p.m. in their brand-new facility on Cliff Gookin Boulevard in Tupelo. Classes are $10 and benefit the animal shelter. Using up your family’s energy and giving back to an important local non-profit is a win-win for everyone.

From movies and bounce houses to arcades and even a visit to the Lee County Library or your favorite local book store, when it pours in Northeast Mississippi, there are plenty of things for your family to get out and experience together.

Jennie Bradford Curlee is the public relations and international sales director for the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau. On rainy days, her family loves to get their steps in at the Mall at Barnes Crossing or check out a movie together.
