Destination – Ship Island, MS

The beach is my happy place. Ever since we moved to Mississippi last year, I’ve been missing the beach terribly, and dreaming of the day I could get my feet salty and sandy again.

I was thankful to find out I wasn’t the only one at Parents & Kids who loved the beach as much as I do. We decided we needed to make a group trip happen, and capture the whole experience on video for our Pick-a-Place blog. This way, you – our readers and followers – won’t miss out on the fun. Hopefully, you’ll find it helpful, and when you decide to visit Ship Island yourselves, you will be well prepared and will have a fantastic time, just like we did! Be on the lookout for a video about our adventures on Ship Island! Follow us on Facebook, so you don’t miss it!

And while we’re waiting for that video, I wanted to share a few of my personal observations. Let me just say: I found another beach I’m adding to my favorites. Ship Island looks like a scene from a movie. When you first see it from a ship (and that’s the only way to get there), the vibrant color contrast of the blue Gulf water and sugar-white sand of the island is breathtaking.

We had a perfect day to visit the island. The water was warm, but refreshing. It was clear enough that we could see the groups of fish swimming by. The whole time we were playing in the water with the kids, the dolphins were playing alongside, far enough that we didn’t bother each other, but close enough that we felt like they were putting up a show just for us. The pelicans and the herons were not bothered by our presence and continued hunting for the fish, flying low over the water. Being a part of this beautiful life on the island was magical.

Ship Island is a National Park and is truly a Mississippi treasure that has yet to be discovered by many. I encourage everyone to check it out, if you get a chance. Ship Island Excursions offers ferry rides from Biloxi and Gulfport. They took good care of us and helped make our experience exceptional. Here is a little info from their website:

Relaxation, recreation and history; these are the gifts offered to you on Ship Island. Here in the north central Gulf of Mexico, about 11 miles off Mississippi’s Coast, are some of the last undeveloped barrier islands in America. Part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and protected by the U.S. Park Service, these exquisite sand islands offer visitors the first high quality beaches for swimming and shelling east of New Orleans.

Attractions include outstanding beaches, beautiful water and clean Gulf air. Locals and visitors consistently rate the 22-mile round trip to Ship Island as the coast’s premier beach experience. Visit historic Fort Massachusetts on your own, or on a Park Ranger guided tour offered after passenger ferries dock at West Ship Island pier.

It truly was unforgettable. I cannot wait for the video, so everyone can see it and start planning their own adventure to Ship Island!
