Book Buzz: She Persisted

She Persisted

Written by Chelsea Clinton

Illustrated by Alexandra Boiger

Ages 5-8, Philomel Books

Young school girls look up to their mothers, grandmothers and siblings for inspiration. Sometimes, even their female teachers. These inspirations are in the students’ immediate world, surrounding them every day. What if there was a collection of inspirational women to read about and learn from their lessons?

Inspired by Senator Elizabeth Warren’s refusal to be silenced in the United States Senate in 2017, Chelsea Clinton has compiled a collection of stories about women throughout history, who have spoken up when they saw injustice, even while overcoming challenges when they tried to be heard. Included are celebrated women, such as Harriet Tubman and Helen Keller. Here also are little known inspirations like ground-breaking journalist Nellie Bly and Claudette Colvin, the first African American to not give up her seat on a bus, thus inspiring Rosa Parks to do the same. What followed has become history. These women inform and inspire.

Boiger’s ink and watercolor illustrations interpret each woman’s accomplishments in a disarming way. The important part, of course, is that they were brave and courageous. This is not lost in the art. The images create a welcoming resonance for a youngster to enjoy and be inspired.

From the very last page of the book –

So, if anyone ever tells you no,

if anyone ever says your voice isn’t important

or your dreams are too big,

remember these women.

They persisted and so should you.

Wise words indeed in today’s world… even for grown-ups.
