The Little Reindeer

Written and illustrated by Nicola Killen

Ages 2-5

A Paula Wiseman Book / Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Ollie had just fallen asleep in her reindeer pajamas on Christmas Eve when she hears the sound.

Jingle, jingle, jingle

She must find out what this is all about. So, she grabs her favorite plush animal, a small reindeer, her sled and heads outside. An adventure has begun! The snow outside her house made for easy sledding.

Jingle, jingle, jingle

There it is again! She follows the sound to see what it is. Jumping on her sled, she rushes downhill. The bells get louder as she approaches the deep, dark woods. She is getting close. After taking a deep breath, she steps into the darkness. What will Ollie find as she ventures into the unknown?  Killen’s delightful story about a Christmas Eve adventure lends a new tale to the holiday season for youngsters who find it very hard to go to sleep. The narrative is well crafted and has a dreamlike quality to it.  Young eyes will enjoy searching the illustrated pages for nuances that add to the story. Her black and white ink wash illustrations, with just a touch of red here and there, are especially whimsical as they dominate the layout. Each page design leaves plenty of white space snow for the text to move the story along. The stylized character designs are simple and fun to look at as Ollie goes about her adventure.

Jingle, jingle, jingle

A clever parent will have a set of bells on hand to ring on Christmas Eve.
