Getting to Know Grenada

Getting to Know Grenada

I recently moved to a new city where I didn’t know anyone. With two precious, active, always-on-the-go kids, my husband and I started this past summer by getting to know our new home: Grenada, Mississippi.

Since we are both teachers, we knew we needed activities to keep our summer break from breaking our sanity. Here are a few ideas that have kept us busy, as well as some upcoming events to mark on your calendar and plan on attending with us.
First, we knew Grenada was known for the lake. If you prefer being on dry land, Grenada Lake also offers amazing hiking trails, a beach, and numerous camp sites if you’re feeling adventurous. There are also cabin rentals if you are like me and need an air conditioner!
Additionally, there are great playgrounds scattered throughout the park area. Best of all, these options are completely free. We like to pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it. The campsites cost between $14-$20 per night for tent or camper options. The cabin rentals start at $85 per night.
The newly opened Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures is an aerial outdoor adventure park. It opened this summer in Winona, Mississippi and has been a hit! Check out the website and you’ll be highly impressed. The owner, Graves Durham, has a contagious excitement about the park, which got me excited to try it out. The park is open year round, and is hopingto open up a Laser Tag park in January. You can also enjoy sitting by the campfire as you take in the views from Old Mountain Scenic Overlook, a perfect ending to your day of adventure. Feel free to bring your own s’mores and hotdog supplies, or let Old Mountain do the shopping for you. Check out the packages offered and find out more information at
Bull Bottom Farms in Duck Hill, Mississippi is another fun, family-friendly farm that opens September 30 through November 5. You’ll find corn mazes, a pumpkin patch, cow train, live pig races, hay rides, giant jumping pillow, wild west tiny town, corn cannons, sand mountain, a concession stand, and more. My family and I have been going to Bull Bottom Farm for years. It screams fall in Mississippi with the temperatures, flannel, and boots! It is open on Saturdays and Sundays. You can also book parties or field trips during the week. For more information about Bull Bottom Farms visit them on Facebook and at their website,
On Saturdays, grab your kiddos and head to the Farmers Market from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. This runs May thru the beginning of Fall.
On September 16 starts Grenada’s Downtown Jubilee: arts and crafts, children activities, music, concessions, antique car show and more.
Free Family Movie Nights downtown have become a staple in numerous communities around the state. Check the Grenada Downtown District on Facebook for dates and movies coming up. This summer included one of my favorites: “E.T.” It’s such a classic!
When things finally cool off, check out the lighting spectacular every weekend in December with the Christmas lights and projection show.
After you enjoy a great outdoor adventure, who wants to cook? Take your family to the iconic Spenser’s Dairy Kream on Sunset Drive in Grenada for a burger and milkshake. There’s a great playground out back that’s handy for occupying kids while you wait on your food. It is opened seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Another one of our favorite family restaurants is Carmella’s in Grenada. They have great Italian food and very affordable prices. The pizzas are to die for! My kiddos say the garlic knots are their favorite. Yummy, buttery, garlic goodness. So load your family up this fall and visit these awesome places.
