Scott’s Toy Box: From the City to Beyond the Worlds
It took a while for me to find the time but I just went and watched The Lego Batman Movie. As a fan of both Legos and Comics, I found the movie enjoyable and laughed several times aloud in the theater. In honor of my movie going experience, I thought I’d take this month’s column to check in to Legos and see what good games they’ve released recently.
Lego City Undercover
First we have a recently released game called Lego City Undercover. In this game you play a police officer, Chase McCain, as he hunts down the criminal Rex Fury. The story of the game is set up like a typical copmovie or TV show with a cast of characters that fit every troupe, like the hardheaded chief who would rather have you working on other cases because he doesn’t believe Rex is in the city and the nice but naive buddy cop that looks up to you. The humor is wonderful in the game, even though some jokes might go over the head of younger players, such as cameos of Colombo and Dirty Harry. The game itself is similar to the Lego games that have come before it, collecting studs to unlock minifigures, red bricks scattered around to unlock and give you special powers you can turn on and off to help make the game easier, etc. They’ve also added Super Builds to the game that you collect blocks to build. This city is huge with 20 different districts and you can commandeer any vehicle nearby to make getting from one place to the other easier. Lego City Undercover can be found where games are sold and cost around $60. The game is available for the PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and Nintendo Switch.
Next is a game that came out in March called Lego Worlds. Lego Worlds is an open world/sandbox Lego game. You play as a space explorer traveling the universe. You hop from world to world, collecting gold bricks and discovering minifigures, creatures, objects and more. After you discover something, you can duplicate it as much as you want. For each minifigure you discover and unlock, you can use their parts to change your character’s look. You can also change the landscape of each world and build whatever you can imagine. One of the best parts of the game is that you can play with a friend in person or over the internet. This game is perfect for anyone who enjoys building with Legos and is also perfect for those who enjoy Minecraft. Lego Worlds can be found where games are sold and cost around $30. The game is available for the PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and a Nintendo Switch version coming out later this year.
The Lego Batman Movie: The Making of the Movie
Lastly we have a book titled The Lego Batman Movie: The Making of the Movie. This book, published by DK Publishing, is a beautiful encyclopedia of the process the filmmakers went through to make the Lego Batman movie. Pages are filled with concept art of scenes that are both in and not in the movie. My favorite pages are the character pages that showcase all the different looks considered for characters such as Batgirl and the Riddler. The book can be found on Amazon for about $14.
