Scott’s Toy Box: October Treats

Scott’s Toy Box: October Treats

October is here once again which is my favorite time of the year because I love colder weather. Although the temperature doesn’t drop quickly in Mississippi, it’s always a treat for me when it does. So for this month I thought I’d find some real treats to pass on to you.

Ring Stix is fun outdoor game of catch. Each person has two sticks, which you cross to place a ring on them. Then as you pull the sticks away from each other the ring will propel forward shooting off in the direction you aim in. The other player then tries to catch the ring on one of their sticks. It’s a great game to play in a group or you can play alone by shooting the ring up in the air and trying to catch it as it comes down. It’s perfect for taking to the reservoir or down to the beach. The ring can be shot pretty fast so make sure you are playing outside and away from window. Ring Stix cost $$ on Amazon.

Disruptus is a game designed to open your mind. The game comes with several cards that each have an object on them and a 6 sided die with the words: disrupt, transform, create 2, improve, judge’s choice, and player’s choice. After rolling the die you draw cards and when what you do depends on what you roll. If you roll disrupt you draw the card and look at the picture to decide what the purpose is. Then you must come up with a way to achieve the same purpose. If you roll transform you think of a way to use what is on the card for a different purpose than what its normal purpose is. If you roll create 2 you draw two cards and take any element from each card to combine together to create a new object or idea. If you roll improve you have to think of a way to make what’s on the card better. Each round has a judge and when the die lands on judges choice they get to pick which of the 4 categories will be used for that round. For player’s choice the judge will turn over 2 cards and the players will choose which category they want to play. Each round takes a minute and the judge takes in all the ideas and then awards what they believe to be the best idea from all the players in regards to the card and what category was rolled. The whole idea behind the game is to think differently and look at objects in new ways and find new uses other than the conventional uses we ascribe to them. Disruptus is made by Funnybone Toys, which also makes the toys, Spectrix, Array, Cubu, and Arrazzles. Disruptus costs $25 on Amazon but also can be found at the Lauren Rodgers Museum in Laurel, MS.
