Scott’s Toy Box: It Was a Dark and Stormy Game
One thing I’ve always loved to do is tell stories. My college minor is in creative writing, I wrote a book called Tilcree, and I have pages and pages of ideas and beginnings of stories from when I was in middle school. A friend of mine even talks about how when we were young, I was writing a story that she was in, and I don’t remember it at all. So when I found these storytelling games I couldn’t wait to get my friends together and play.
Once Upon A Time is a card game. There are two types of cards: once-upon-a-time cards and happily-ever-after cards. The once-upon-a-time cards are the main cards you play with, and they have will have a character, place, event, item, or aspect on them. As you tell the story, you aim to mention what’s on your cards, and once you mention it, you can lay the card down. To be fair, you can only mention one thing per sentence, and it has to be important to the story to be played. Also, if you mention something that someone else has, they can play that card and take control over the storytelling. Once you’re out of once-upon-a-time cards, you try to weave the story into the ending that you have on your happily-ever-after card. You have to make sure that the story comes to a satisfying ending before you can play your happily-ever-after card, but once you play that card, the story is over and you win. You can buy this game on Amazon.com for about $24, and there is also an expansion called Dark Tales for about $10.
Rory’s Story Cubes is a dice game. It comes with nine dice and a case that you can roll them into when traveling. Each side of each die has a picture on it—like an airplane or a tree—totaling 54 images. The case has a few ideas of games to play like rolling all the dice and creating a story linking all the pictures together, and there are more ideas at storycubes.com. There is also a version called Rory’s Story Cubes: Actions where the pictures are all verbs. I had fun mixing all 18 dice together and pairing up the regular story cubes with the action story cubes. You can find them on Amazon.com for about $9.
Think-ets is a tiny trinket game. Each Think-ets bag comes with 15 trinkets from around the world, and there are four different-colored bags so that you can get more than one set and not worry about getting the same trinkets. It comes with a booklet of ten games like memory games. There is also a story game where you pick a trinket and use it as the centerpiece for your story. Think-ets come from Think-A-Lot Toys, which offers many storytelling games. You can buy Think-ets for about $10 at www.think-a-lot.com.
