Scott’s Toy Box: Required Playing
Being a slow reader is tough. I can’t enjoy movies with subtitles. A “quick read” for some takes me a month or two. I was never able to keep up with the required reading for my English class. However, in spite of that, I do enjoy the reading and writing I do in my free time. This month I decided to focus on games revolving around books and even a book that you can draw in.
Bring Your Own Book
First we have Bring Your Own Book. In this fun family game, players use a book to find a phrase or sentence that fulfills the prompt on the chosen card. In each round there is a judge who picks up a card and reads aloud what to look for in the book. Then the players start skimming to find the best fit for the challenge (or maybe the funniest fit for the challenge). Once someone has found a response the timer starts and everyone else has only a few minutes to get theirs. If the timer goes off before a player has found something he can simply pick something from a random page. Once the players have read their sentence or phrase aloud, the judge picks a winner, awards them the card, and a new round begins. The best thing about this game is that any book can be chosen. Once a player has won two cards, the group exchanges books to keep things fresh. The game costs $22 and can be found on Amazon.
Tall Tales
Next is the game Tall Tales. This game is all about the fun of storytelling. The game comes with 50 story pieces, 24 story place cards and a story bag for easy storage. The game is fairly easy to play. The player reaches into the story bag and pulls out 8 story pieces and tells a story. The game comes with a couple of different variations to make the tall tales even better. This game will help encourage creativity and imaginations grow. Grids: A Drawing Book For Squares
Lastly is the book Grids: A Drawing Book For Squares. This book is full of activities for those who love angles. Artists-to-be get to play with patterns, symmetry, 2D and 3D shapes, and even learn about shading. Each page has instructions but also leaves enough room to try out new and different drawings. This book is great for those who love to draw. The book costs about $10 on Amazon.
