Scott’s Toy Box: Toys By The Subject

In a certain way, I miss school. I don’t miss the homework (cause let’s be honest, you still have homework as an adult sometimes) nor do I miss tests, but I do miss being taught and learning new things. On occasion I think about maybe taking another college class that I could fit into my schedule; but then I have dreams where I’m doing just that and can’t remember what class I have on what day and where it is. So while I have been reminiscing about learning since it’s time for everyone to go back to school, I thought for this month I’d go and find some toys that will help out with your academia in various subjects.

Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?

First there is the Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? boardgame. Just like in the show players are tested to see if they answer 11 questions that would be asked to students in grades 1st through 5th. During each round a player will pick which grade the questions will come from and each player will take a turn being asked a question from that grade. Once each player had taken a turn answering a question from that grade, a tile will be placed on the Grade board. When both slots for a grade have been covered by a tile, questions from that grade can’t be asked again. On your turn you’ll be the one answering the question but all players will write down an answer so that the player whose turn it is may use one of their peek, copy, or save tokens. There are a variety of subjects from reading to life science. If at anytime you answer incorrectly, you won’t be eligible to answer the $1,000,000 question; however, you can keep playing because if no one is smarter than a 5th grader then the person with the most money wins ends up winning. The game costs $20 and can be found on Amazon.

The Instant Pickleball Court Set

The next game focuses on PE and is The Instant Pickleball Court Set. Pickleball is much like tennis, except the paddles are larger and the balls are wiffle balls. The set comes with two paddles that are lightweights and shorter than tennis rackets, two pickleballs that move slower and bounce higher than tennis balls, and a sturdy 12ft. free standing net that you can place on any flat surface. There is also a carrying case so you can take it anywhere, play in your driveway or in a large recreation room. It’s perfect for kids and beginners and just a great way to have some physical exercise. The set costs $99 and can be bought from

Puzzles & Dragons Z + Puzzles & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition

Lastly we have a game to exercise your brain called Puzzles & Dragons Z + Puzzles & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition. In Puzzle & Dragons Z, you play as a Ranger in Zed City tasked to put the world back together after an evil organization has broken it up. To do so, you and your monsters fight other monsters to free the ancient dragons the organization has captured. To fight the monsters along the way, you use your stylus to move around color orbs to make 3-of-a-kind matches and allow monsters of that color to attack. Be careful because in each dungeon you go through you only have one health bar and once it’s emptied you have to start all over. In this game you can collect and evolve over 250+ monsters. TheSuper Mario Bros Edition is played the same way with the basic story that Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario and Luigi make their way to save her. Because of this you get to game play a whole lot quicker so it feels more like a casual play mode where the other game is the story mode. In the Mario edition, there are 80+ enemies to recruit and evolve to make the best team possible for each level. The games come together in one pack for the Nintendo 3DS and cost $29 on Amazon.
