Scott’s Toy Box: June Explorations

June is a great time to explore the world around us. Take a walk into those woods behind your house, or travel a bit farther down a neighborhood road you’ve never ventured down. Sit under a tree and observe the patterns of the branches and leaves, or stay inside and play with new toys. Summer is a great time to try new things, especially games and toys! Whether (sneakily) studying grammar in a new word game or exploring a mythical world on your computer, June is sure to be a month of firsts!

You’ve Been Sentenced!

You’ve Been Sentenced! is a card game that will have your family creating crazy sentences all day long. The pentagonal cards have five words each, with each word earning a certain number of points. Players start with 10 cards, and begin making sentences using one word from each card. The sentence can use as few as two cards, and as many as ten. All players vote to decide whether or not each sentence makes sense, and then the players receive their points. The first player to reach 200 points wins. You’ve Been Sentenced! costs about $20 on Amazon, and comes in a variety of themes such as sports of sci-fi, to fit your family’s interests.

Laser Pegs

Laser Pegs are awesome building toys that use light-up blocks called pegs. By inserting the pegs into the base, you connect a current and light up all the blocks. Since the blocks are clear, the lights shine through. The laser pegs come in many different constructible sets, such as vehicles, bugs and robots. The tank I played with was motorized with hitches that made it connectible to other tanks, so kids can form a complete train. The prices of the Laser Pegs vary depending on the set. The Laser Peg Runner Mini Tank I played with is sold exclusively at Target so look for it there, or online.

The Lost Titans

The Lost Titans is a MMORPG, which stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. In these games, kids create their own characters and play with others in real time over the internet. The Lost Titans calls upon you, a newly trained “Warrior of Light”, to save the Titan Ruler, Hyperion, and the land from the Titan, Ophion. You traverse through worlds and stories inspired by Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythologies. The controls are easy to understand for beginners to MMORPG pro’s. Players keep track of their health and mana, which allows them to perform special attacks, while using strategy to improve their character’s weapons, spells, armor, etc. The best part of The Lost Titans is the price- it’s free to play! Log on to and join in to see you enjoy it. (Please note: Parental discretion is advised.)
