Scott’s Toy Box: Games You’ll Love
It’s February, which means it’s the season of love. Every 14th we think about the ones we love and may even get them something special or even spend time with them to show them that we love them. This month I found some games that you’ll love to play by yourself or with your loved one.
Clue
It’s no secret that I love Clue, and the most recent version of Clue has been updated again. You can still play the classic way and, like the last update, it comes with extra cards that you can add to give people an edge in the game. The biggest update to the game in this version is the board. The mansion has been completely redesigned to actually look like a house. No longer are there those weird hallways that go to nowhere excepta start space, and now all the players start in the center of the board. The rooms have even been updated to include a bedroom and a bathroom. This version also comes with rules for how to play a two-player game of Clue for when you can’t find that third person. It costs about $20 on Amazon.com.
Lego Lord of the Rings Video Game
Another game I love is the series of Lego video games. The most recent one that come out is the Lego Lord of the Rings game. The video game covers the story of the three Lord of the Rings movies. There are about 18 levels that comprise the game, and even when you’ve finished playing through them you still aren’t even halfway through with the game as there are several characters and objects to unlock. You can play with a friend, and at points through the game, it will split you up so that one person is playing one part of the story and the other is playing a different part. The game is rated E+10 for cartoon violence and comic mischief, and I will say that some of the puzzles can be a little challenging for those younger than 10. You can find this game on Amazon.com for about $35-$20, depending on which system you buy it for.
Fluxx
Fluxx is a card game for people who love to change the rules in the middle of the game, because that’s part of the fun. You start with the basic rule of draw one card/play one card, and then you can play new rule cards to change the game. There are other types of cards as well. Keepers are cards that you lay in front of you to win the game. Goal cards tell you what you need to accomplish to win (which can easily change from turn to turn). Most—if not all—goals are to have two specific Keepers in front of you. There are also Action and Creeper cards. The Action cards help you during the game—for example, telling you to draw more cards or swap your hand with an opponent—whereas the Creeper cards hinder you from reaching the goal. There are several versions of Fluxx, like space or pirates, so you can pick from several themes if you like. They cost around $12 on Amazon.com.
