Growth Spurts: Moving. Ugh.

My family and I are currently in the midst of a move. Here are some things I am learning through the process:

A.

  • We have way too much stuff.
  • We get really attached to our stuff.
  • We have really great friends who are willing to help us pack up all our stuff.

B.

  • When removing one’s stuff from one’s former house, one should be prepared to find a shocking amount of dirt and dust.
  • Good allergy medicine is key.
  • We are much filthier than we ever thought we were.

C.

  • Buying a house takes a lot of time.
  • Sometimes it takes longer than you would think. And even though you can’t move into your new house yet, you still might have to go ahead and move out of your old house.
  • It is a blessing to have very generous friends and family who are willing to let you (and your dog) live with them while you’re between houses.

D.

  • When you’re living between houses, it’s nice to have a minivan.
  • Minivans hold a lot of stuff.
  • (Why do I keep buying more stuff??)

E.

  • Even our dog has a lot of anxiety about the move.
  • Dogs are people, too.
  • Not really.

F.

  • There are just some things you can’t control.
  • This doesn’t mean you wouldn’t like to control them.
  • The latter point still doesn’t change the first point.

G.

  • I am so thankful for my husband, who has led our family well through these crazy transitions.
  • My kids are troopers.
  • I have my moments.

It’s true. I like my nest. My family and I have learned more about flexibility and patience (among other lessons that are hard to learn) through this process, so I’m thankful for that. But I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ll be especially thankful to finally get into our next house!

Carrie Bevell Partridge and her family hope to be at least somewhat settled in their new home in Ridgeland, MS, by the time this article is printed. If not—well, they still have their minivan.
