P&K How To: How To Select A Gym

By Leah Kackley

A good workout! Wow – it does so many things for a person. It can lift spirits, release tension and stress, and provide a sense of accomplishment while improving health and mobility, all in an hour or less a day. It literally can be the best medicine a person can take. For some, home workouts are perfectly fine. But for a lot of people, the motivation and sense of community that a gym provides is important. With so many different choices, though, settling on one can be tough! Pilates? HIIT? Hot Exercise? Crossfit? Zumba? Barre? Yoga? Exhale!

Try everything. Most gyms will allow a “test drive” before committing to a membership. Ask about a guest pass that allows for several workouts to see if the place really fits your personality. Then, follow your heart, not the crowd. Just because “everyone” is doing a certain workout doesn’t mean that you have to cotton to it. Do what fits your personality, fitness level, and goals. But don’t make assumptions! You may just love something unexpected. That’s why trying everything is best.

If deciding on a singular form of exercise just isn’t happening, then think about joining a place that offers all types of exercise, like the Y. Being able to go from Pilates to HIIT to weight training can be fantastic for upholding motivation and interest.

Remember, now is not forever. Your choice may be limited by childcare needs, but it won’t always be that way. Go with life’s flow and be grateful to have the opportunity to get healthier even if it’s not the “perfect” place. Just get there and do it. Exercise is the one prescription everyone should be taking.
