Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree

Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree

Considered by some to be the oldest outdoor singing Christmas tree tradition, Belhaven University’s Singing Christmas Tree has become a treasured tradition in the Jackson area. Year 2018 will mark its 86th anniversary of bringing joy to our community.

Started in 1933, the event began as an all-female choir which performed for faculty and students before the school’s Christmas break. The event was soon moved outdoors when choir conductor Mignonne Caldwell realized the event would be an enjoyable way for the public to begin the Christmas season, too. After Caldwell’s retirement, Henry Thomas Ford began directing the choir in 1962, adding men to the group.

Today, a 35-foot-tall structure accommodates a 100-member choir made up of the Belhaven Concert Choir and Belhaven faculty, staff, and alumni. Named one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast, the Singing Christmas Tree is typically held during the first weekend of December and has become a beloved tradition for families throughout the Jackson area. The white robes, reflective collars, and tiaras of the performers, along with strands of colorful interactive lighting, make the Singing Christmas Tree a sight to behold!

Bring a warm blanket and pick up some hot chocolate to enjoy this lovely tradition with your family this year.
